Q. What is one trend or development in the domain industry that excites you the most right now and why?

The big thing that excites most: The fantastic people in domains!
Within the heterogeneous IT landscape, with millions of people working for numerous big and small companies, the domain industry feels like a subcultural community. Everybody knows everyone, there are many partnerships, even between competitors, a lot of formal and informal groups and associations. While there’s a lot of business going on, domain people are famous for having fun and parties. Whenever we’re meeting at an event, you’re being inspired by the huge joy of reunion, meeting again with clients, partners, competitors and acquaintances, getting to know new people, exchanging and exploring ideas. A lot of long-lasting friendships emerge out of our profession, which makes working in domains so loveable.

In recent years we have seen a huge trend for consolidation going on. The domain industry grew from start-ups to remarkable incorporations, with a lot of acquisition and merger activity. Competitors become colleagues, large groups are formed, and the rapid growth in our domain industry is picking up even more speed. We see such activity in the IT business in general, making it exciting to see clients and partners grow together with your own group of companies.

While domains in themselves are a rather old product, there are more things on the horizon. ICANN is preparing the next round to introduce new generic TLDs, expected to start in 2026. So, we expect a lot of new TLDs and players in the domain business.

Q. What's something that sets CentralNic Reseller apart from other domain reselling services, in your opinion?

Again, it’s the people. We bring 20 years of experience in the market, with a number of people working in reselling for more than a decade. This long experience and expertise put us into a pretty unique position, being able to understand the market and the reselling business at the highest levels. Our clients and partners as well as our own people benefit immensely from this.

On the technical side, we’re able to fulfil individual wishes and provide tailor-made solutions. Our approach is to roll out features that emerge from such requirements to the entire customer base.

Of course we have some unique selling propositions. Our fully automated high-performance backend provides all features via multiple API gateways and Control Panel, which is one-of-a-kind. As of today, we offer 1244 TLD extensions, plus launch phases for new gTLDs, a number of local presence services, as well as Trademark Clearinghouse services. To complete the domain management, we also offer various methods to monetize domains on the secondary market, DNS services, TLS/SSL certificates, and a dedicated team for even the most complex migration services.

Q. What do you think is the biggest challenge for domain resellers today and how does CentralNic Reseller help overcome this?

The sheer amount of selection and detail. So many TLD extensions to choose from, so many available features, so many procedures and policies to respect. What we do is offer consultancy alongside our services.

Q. Can you share one interesting fact about the domain reselling industry that most people may not know?

Did you know that in the history of our domain reselling business we were or are still partnering with almost all large competitors? We consider a lot of people our friends, even if we’re fighting for the same clients.

Q. What advice would you give to someone starting their journey as a domain reseller?

Carefully examine where domains fit into your existing business procedures. Start with simple steps, like registering, modifying and renewing a domain, and look into further features at further stages. Starting with domains is easy, going really deep into it is a long way. And ask your providers for assistance and consultancy.

Q. What is your favorite domain name and why?

I like dict.leo.org, an online dictionary I’m using almost daily to translate from and to German, my native language. The website is pretty old-fashioned and simple and has existed since 1996.

Q. What are one to two key traits or skills that you believe are essential to succeed in the domain reselling industry?

Be discrete. Whenever you talk to leads and prospects, clients, partners and competitors, we always share information, sometimes insights, sometimes we learn something new or obtain new information. In particular our clients value our discretion, which is the foundation for successful cooperation.

Be open-minded. A lot of features and products around domains that hit the market may look strange, and often the initial reaction is mixed and comes along with doubts. But more than once they become successful and prove themselves in the market.

Never stop learning. Even after many years in the domain industry new trends come up, policies evolve, the market is changing. Domains may be old, but ever evolving.

Through this engaging Q&A, Martin Spreer has shed light on what makes the domain industry vibrant and CentralNic Reseller a leader in the field. From the dynamic community and innovative trends to our unique technical solutions and dedicated support, we hope you’ve gained valuable insights into our operations and ethos.
